Technology and education essays
Technology and education essays Living in a society where technology is virtually unavoidable, it is inevitable that tasks that have been done in the past will need to be altered in order to accommodate the fast-paced, technologically enhanced world that we live in. Our every day tasks have changed in one way or another due to technological advancements, and are quickly becoming the norm. The types of medium that we use to communicate with one another have been evolving throughout the past years: the use of a telephone is being replaced by teleconferencing, the transferring of information can be done faster through the Internet or local networks, and emails have taken the place of letters and memos. There are many examples of every day activities in which technology has made its mark, and it seems to be doing so incessantly. The world of technology is swelling right before our eyes, and will continuously do so for many years to come. There is a growing need to educate ourselves and others about technology so that w e become familiar with it and not feel intimidated by this growing phenomenon - and the best way to do that is through our education system. There are 3 main tiers in our education system: primary, secondary and post-secondary levels. Currently, the school systems are attempting to incorporate a small dose of technology into their classrooms while maintaining the traditional classroom environment. One popular program that is being used presently is "Cable in the Classroom", which allows for easy learning for students, allowing a teacher to use computer programs as a tool to help illustrate certain topics discussed in class. This concept is becoming fairly popular and is proving to be a successful tool. However, it must lead us to question that if a simple concept such as this is becoming embraced by the educators, why have they not expanded to create this type of learning environment all across the board? Many might argue that doing so would take away t...

Marketing Research assignment 4 - Essay Example In this case, there would be both public and professional understanding of the terms. Margin of error therefore is a radius of confidence where a statistical data from a survey relies on. This means that the marginal error is a center of information in which case there might be a higher or lower relative information. When a sample percentage is presented, a slot can be reduced on the actual value of 100% to 97% so that the 3% becomes the value of the error due to many procedures. The company can conduct a probability sampling. In this regard, each member of the target has a non-zero probability of inclusion in the sample. Here the information is unbiased because the information produced would relatively be expected to adhere to strict statistical analysis to avoid bigger errors. The sampling error considerable here is the measurable sampling error expressed as a confidence level. This means that there is a high reduction in the errors realized (Rea and Parker). The language of health informatic - Essay Example ts or characteristics of the database includes the ability for it to have a simple decoding formula whereby all parties on the system can easily decode data that are put in the system and use these data in a way and manner that best meets their needs. Again, the data ought to be highly accessible. Accessibility in this case would touch on the need to ensure that the programming is designed at the level and standard of the userââ¬â¢s information technology knowledge. Finally, it is important to structure the database in such a way that even though it can be accessed easily, it cannot be easily penetrated by intruders. That is security should be a key factor. Database would be found to include among other things, personal data that touches on name, age, gender, religion and insurance information of patient (Gillespie et al, 2009). This is followed with patient profile, which includes data on aspects of the patient daily life including occupation, education, marital status, children, hobbies, worries, needs, patterns and habits (Tune and Salzman, 2012). Furthermore, the database looks at medical history of the patient as well as physical examination and laboratory data. When it comes to these areas, chief complaints, area of present illness, past medical history and medication are clearly spelt out on the database. The database could therefore be said to be an electronic system that makes the identification of the patient easier for the practitioner. Indeed, it is worth stressing the point that having a database that merely spells out and possesses the characteristics and medical data above is not enough. Rather, these data must be presented and handled in such a way that it represents the best form of utilization for the health practitioner. It is in such regard that the need to have a uniform coding and standardization of the data becomes important. In a multi-facility regional hospital such as this one, data that are uniformly coded in a single system would bring a

English Composition Essay Example for Free
English Composition Essay The term juvenile delinquent is best defined as young defender, or a wrongdoer. A person who transgresses moral or civil law. (Audioenglish. net) There are many different theories on the causes of crime and bad behavior. Youth crime is a major issue and receives a great amount of attention from the news media and many politicians today. A juvenile delinquent is one who continuously commits crimes. Usually a juvenile will sometimes commit the same crimes that were done to them to others. An example would be bullying in school. Maybe the juvenile was bullied as well. They also sometimes have mental disorders or behavioral disorders. Students who experience excessive suspension and expulsion are more likely to become part of the school to prison pipeline (Fenning Rose, 2007). Now being examined is the issue of the school to prison pipeline and trying to understand how students who drop out (or are pushed out) of high school are more likely to enter the prison system (Fine, 1991). Students feel pushed out of school because of actions or barriers put up by their school. The student may end up feeling like they donââ¬â¢t belong in school, or do not fit in, or they are not smart enough to be in school. This then pushes them towards the streets and into bad behavior that leads them to becoming a juvenile delinquent. According to Brownstein, the zero tolerance is a failed approach. This policy is used to mandate predetermined consequences for rule infractions, regardless of the circumstances; its initially aimed at making schools safe. The best way to prevent serious violence at school, the theory went, was to ban any and all weapons of threats of violence, and accept no excuses. Browstein, 2010). Zero tolerance policies may be contributing to teen violence. Suspensions and expulsions in public schools have increased dramatically. Between 1974 and 2006, the rate at which U. S. students were suspended and expelled from school nearly doubled from 3. 7% of students in 1974 to . 1% of students in 2006. It is estimated that over 100,000 students were expelled and 3,300, 000 students were suspended at least once in the 2005-2006 school year which is an 8% increase in suspensions and a 15% increase in expulsions since the 2001-2001 school year. Brownstein, 2010) Today schools are getting carried away with the zero tolerance policy somewhat. Instead of helping to resolve a simple conflict in which they would call home for, they are now calling law enforcement. Too many school incidents that can be handled by the school are now being taken care of by the police and courts. ( Brownstein, 2010) An example given in the article talked about how a Columbus, GA teen student was expelled for violating school rules by talking to his mother whom he had not spoken to in thirty days, on his cell phone while at school. His mother was on deployment as a soldier in Iraq. It is common sense that the choice of disciplinary action was extremely harsh. There is no way to justify expelling this student given the circumstances of the phone call. Therefore, this example surely helps you to see exactly how this zero tolerance policy is indeed failing our children. Trying to get you to understand that yet the policy is put in place to protect the school faculty and other students from violent behavior from certain students, it is also being used in incidents that do not need to be presented to law enforcement. Expulsion and suspension disciplinary action is not making our schools safer or more academically sound. In fact, schools with high rate expulsion and suspensions usually have less satisfactory school ratings according to the American Psychological Association. This suggests to me that it also contributes to children becoming juvenile delinquents due to harsh punishment and the things that they are currently dealing with in their personal lives. I will point out how African American students are suspended at nearly three times the rate and expelled at 3. times the rate of white students, according to the U. S. Department of Educations Office of Civil Rights. Latino students are 1. 5 times as likely to be suspended when compared to white peers. It seems that the white students get referred to the office at a higher rate than students of color for offenses such as smoking, vandalism, leaving without permission, and obscene language. African-American and Latino students are referred for discipline at a higher rate than their white peers for disrespect, excessive noise, and loitering. Brownstein, 2010) These behaviors you would think would seem to rely on subjective judgment on the part of educators. Maybe this is part of the reason why most students of color are failing in school and become juvenile delinquents somewhere along the line. They are hardly allowed the chance to stay in class if they are consistently disciplined harshly over fairly minor infractions that can be handled by the parents and teacher alone. Educators need to take the time out to think about what they are disciplining a student for, and how they are disciplining them and the consequences that lie ahead if you are too harsh. It is the same way when it comes to a parent raising children. You must know when you are being too excessive when it comes to punishment. Conclusion Promote the students positive behavior more and maybe the outcome will be different. Behavior begins at home. Parents come first when it comes to making sure your child/children act accordingly in public. It is a group effort also if you are taking on the responsibility of teaching someones child. You cant just give up on the child, or take the easiest route such as harsh discipline. There has to be a system put in place in the home and in the schools to turn around bad behavior to avoid our children being introduced to the jail system turning them into juvenile delinquents. There also must be a system put in place in the home and school to look at certain incidents that happen in school not all in the same light. How we raise our children will be the result you get out of the situation. Strive to raise them the right way, and educators should stop relying on law enforcement to handle what can be handled between themselves, the student and the parents.

Immunization :: essays research papers
We are always hearing on the news and in newspapers about children catching diseases and often dying from them. Why is this happening when all of these diseases are easily preventable by simply being immunised, why arenââ¬â¢t parents getting their children Immunised, is it for religious beliefs or just carelessness. What ever their reason may be is it really good enough, because why would anyone rather let their child be able to catch and spread a deadly disease then have them Immunised, so Immunisation should be made compulsory for all children. In Australia in the last ten years more then 137 known people have died and many more fallen very ill from contagious and infectious disease. Diseases such as diphtheria; tetanus, pertussis, poliomyelitis, measles, mumps rubella and Haemophilus influenzae, This is a great tragedy considering all these diseases are easily preventable by immunisation. Immunisation or vaccination is a very effective and safe form of medicine used to prevent severe diseases occurring from viruses and other infectious organisms and increase the amount of protective antibodies. It is given by drops in the mouth or injecting a person with a dead or modified disease-causing agent, in order for the person to become immune to that disease. If enough people in a community are immunised, the infection can no longer be spread from person to person and the disease will eventual die out altogether. This is how smallpox was eradicated from the world, and polio, which has been removed from many countries. But for this to happen in Australia at least 95 percent of the population would have to be immunised, which is far more then what it is now being at only 78 percent. So by making it compulsory for all children to be immunised this percentage would rise well above 95 and the diseases that are in our country now will soon disappear all together. Immunisation is the only effective way of protection for children against these diseases because childrenââ¬â¢s immune systems are defenceless ageist them because they are not fully developed yet, and once infected in most cases there is no cure or at least a very low chance of one. Minor side effects of immunisation, like redness at the injection site, or occasionally a mild fever, which can easily be reduced with a paracetamol. But why would any one rather let your child be able to catch and spread these deadly diseases then get them immunised because of these rare and very minor risks. Effects of Global Warming Essay
Throughout the past century there has been a considerable increase in the average temperature on earth. This average rise of temperature is called global warming. It is caused by the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Almost 100% of the observed temperature increase over the last 50 years has been due to the increase of greenhouse gas concentrations like water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane and ozone (Cause and Effect for Global Warming). The greenhouse gases trap the heat in the atmosphere and make the earth warm. These greenhouse gases have increased tremendously in the atmosphere due to the recent industrialization. The main effects of global warming are climate change, the rise of sea levels, and the behavior change of wildlife. These are the primary effects of global warming; however, they also contribute to a broad range of secondary effects. The global temperatures have been increasing in recent years, this is causing climate change. By the end of the century the global temperature is predicted to increase by 3à ° to 5à °C. Changes in temperature patterns have effects on extreme weather events: they increase the frequency, duration, and intensity of floods, droughts, heat waves, and tornadoes (Cause and Effect for Global Warming). There has been a high correlation of hurricane power with tropical sea surface temperature. Since the surface temperature is increasing, the total annual power of hurricanes has increased. The nature of the earthââ¬â¢s atmosphere is becoming even more unpredictable, which is a cause for attention. This brings about a variation in the biological systems; essentially the crops, forests, oceans, fresh waterways, and grasslands (Effects of Global Warming). Higher or lower agricultural yields is becoming a concern for farmers. Another effect of climate change will be the vegetation that is available on the earth. The tundra vegetation will turn to temperate, cold deciduous and evergreen type of forest. Woody plant population will tend to increase as a result of increased precipitation. There will be a drastic change in the type of vegetation available in the area, which will in turn effect the inhabitation of the area (Effects of Global Warming). The second major effect of the global warming is the rising sea levels. There will be a considerable increase in the water level of oceans and seas as a result of the melting of glaciers. When the temperature exceeds a particular level or warm temperatures last for a long enough period, and if there is insufficient precipitation, glaciers and ice sheets will lose mass (Oceans and sea level rise). This increase in sea and ocean levels will engulf land at the coastal areas and some low lying countries may even become submerged (Effects of Global Warming). This will cause the most dramatic alterations in habitats. Most of the worldââ¬â¢s coastal cities were established during the last few millennia, a period when global sea level have been constant. Since the mid-19th century, sea levels have been rising, and during the 20th century, sea levels rose about 15-20 centimeters. Satellite measurements taken over the past decade, however, indicate that the rate of increase has jumped to about 3. 1 mm/year, which is significantly higher than the average rate in the 20th century (Oceans and sea level rise). Even a small increase in sea levels can have a dramatic effect on coastal environments. Over 600 million people live in coastal areas that are less than 10 meters above sea level. If this continues to get worse than a very large number of people in vulnerable locations are going to be forced to relocate. If relocation does not happen before these areas are flooding my storm surges, many refugees are likely to result (Oceans and sea level rise). These nations are also at risk of losing their fresh-water supplies as sea level rise pushes saltwater into their aquifers. Aside from the effect this might have on the human population, there are many environmental concerns such as coastal erosion, wetland and coastal plain flooding, and a loss of habitats for fish, birds, and other wildlife and plants. The behavior in wildlife is also a concern, many animals are being forced to change territories, and some species are at threat to extinction. A behavior pattern of the animals studied shows that the animals are beginning to shift their population north or towards a higher altitude (Effects of Global Warming). Beyond habitat movement, many scientists agree that global warming is causing a shift in the timing of various natural recurrent events in the lives of animals. Many birds have altered the timing of long-held migratory and reproductive routines to better sync up with a warming climate. Also, some hibernating animals are ending their slumbers earlier each year (EarthTalk). Different species sharing like habitats are responding in different ways, tearing apart ecological communities. According to ââ¬Å"Defenders of Wildlifeâ⬠, some of the wildlife species hit the hardest so far by global warming include caribou, arctic foxes, toads, polar bears, penguins, gray wolves, tree swallows, painted turtles and salmon (EarthTalk). Many other marine animals are affected as well. It is expected that many species will die off or become extinct due to the increase in the temperatures of the water, whereas various other species, which prefer warmer waters, will increase tremendously. Perhaps the most disturbing changes are expected in the coral reefs that are likely to die off as an effect of global warming (Effects of Global Warming). Species that rely upon the existence of sea ice to survive are likely to be impacted, posing the threat of extinction for polar bears, seals, and some breeds of penguins. Researcher Bill Fraser has tracked the decline of the Adelie penguins on Antarctica, where their numbers have fallen from 32,000 breeding pairs to 11,000 in 30 years (Effects of Global Warming). It is quite clear that the effects of global warming have the potential to be disastrous. Global warming is causing rapid temperature changes affecting ourselves, our environment, and the rest of the wildlife. All of these factors contribute to our changing world. The population would be right to prepare for these changes, before it is too late to adapt. People should recognize the source of this, and stop adding to this negative loop.

Night World : Witchlight Chapter 3
Keller turned her head quickly. Nissa was standing there, cool and imperturbable as always, one hand on her hip. Her short mink-colored hair wasn't even ruffled; her eyes, just a shade or two darker, were steady. And she was holding an ironwood fighting stick with a very sharp point. Keller growled faintly in relief. You couldn't ask Nissa to be creative-her mind didn't work that way. But on any question of logic, she was unbeatable, and she had nerves of ice. More important right now, she was a superb fighter. ââ¬Å"If you want to play, why don't you try me?â⬠she suggested, and whipped the fighting stick around expertly a few times. It whistled in the air, traced a complicated figure, and ended up casually across her shoulder. Then she slowly extended the point toward the vampire's throat. ââ¬Å"Yeah, and don't leave me out.â⬠This voice was husky and shaky but still grim. It came from behind the counter. Winnie was pulling herself up. She coughed once, then stood straight, facing the vampire. Energy, orange and pulsating, flared between her cupped hands. Witch power. You're alive, Keller thought. She couldn't suppress the flash of relief. The vampire looked from one girl to the other. Then he glanced at Keller, who was lying on her side, feebly trying to make her legs work. Her tail lashed furiously. ââ¬Å"Come on!â⬠the other vampire shouted. He was staggering under the weight of the dragon, heading for the door. ââ¬Å"Let's get Azhdeha out of here. He's the most important thing.â⬠The first vampire hesitated one instant, then whirled and plunged after his friend. Together, they hustled the dragon out into the mall. Then they were gone. Keller gave one final gasping snarl and felt herself change. This time, it felt more like a snail falling out of a shell. Her claws dissolved, her tail withered, and she slumped into her human body. ââ¬Å"Boss! Are you okay?â⬠Winnie came toward her, a little unsteadily. Keller raised her head, black hair falling on either side to the floor. She pushed herself up with her arms and looked around, taking stock. The shop was quiet It was also a wreck. Winnie's impact with the wall had knocked off most of the decorative plates and clocks there. Keller's fight with the dragon had trashed a lot of the shelves. There were shattered Christmas ornaments everywhere, little glittering fragments of scarlet and holly green and royal purple. It was like being in a giant kaleidoscope. And outside, chaos was gathering. The entire fight had only taken about five minutes, but all the time it had been going on, people had been running away from the shop and screaming. Keller had noticed them; she had simply filed them away in her mind as unimportant. There had been nothing she could do about them. Now, there were security officers closing in, and someone had undoubtedly called the police. She pushed with her arms again and managed to stand up. ââ¬Å"Nissa.â⬠It hurt her throat to speak. ââ¬Å"Where's the car?â⬠ââ¬Å"Right down there.â⬠Nissa pointed at the floor. ââ¬Å"Directly below us, parked outside the Mrs. Fields cookie store.â⬠ââ¬Å"Okay. Let's get Diana out.â⬠Keller looked at the young girl with the shimmering hair who as yet hadn't spoken a single word. ââ¬Å"Can you walk?â⬠Iliana stared at her. She didn't say anything. Stunned and frightened, Keller guessed. Well, a lot had happened in the last few minutes. ââ¬Å"I know this all seems bizarre to you, and you're probably wondering who we are.Ill explain everything. But right now, we have to get out of here. Okay?â⬠Iliana shrank a little, trembling. Not exactly a hero, Keller thought. Or quick on the uptake. Then she decided she was being unfair. This girl was the Witch Child; she undoubtedly had hidden strengths. ââ¬Å"Come on,â⬠Galen said to Iliana gently. ââ¬Å"She's right; it isn't safe here.â⬠Iliana looked up at him earnestly. She seemed about to agree. Then she gave a little shiver, shut her eyes, and fainted. Galen caught her as she fell. Keller stared. ââ¬Å"She's too pure to deal with this kind of stuff,â⬠Winnie said defensively. ââ¬Å"Violence and all. It's not the same as being chicken.â⬠It was at that exact moment that Keller could pinpoint her first real doubts about the new Wild Power. Galen looked down at the girl who lay in his arms like a broken lily. He looked at Keller. ââ¬Å"You take her; well surround you and cover you,â⬠Keller said, cutting him off. She knew her hair was in complete disarray, a wild cyclone of black around her. Her sleek jumpsuit was torn and stained, and she was clutching her right shoulder, which still throbbed in agony. But she must have looked fairly commanding, because Galen didn't say another word, just nodded and started toward the door. Nissa led the way in front of him. Winnie and Keller fell in behind. They were ready to fight, but when the security guards with walkie-talkies saw Nissa whirling her stick, they backed away. The ordinary people, curious onlookers attracted by all the noise, not only backed away but ran. Lots of them screamed. ââ¬Å"Go,â⬠Keller said. ââ¬Å"Fast. Go.â⬠They made it to Mrs. Fields without anybody trying to stop them. A girl with a red apron flattened herself against a wall as they thrust their way behind the counter and into the sanctum full of industrial-sized ovens in the back. A gangly boy dropped a tray with a clang, and lumps of raw cookie dough scattered on the floor. And then they were bursting through the back entrance, and there was the car, a white limousine illegally parked at the curb. Nissa whipped out a key chain and pressed a button, and Keller heard the click of doors unlocking. ââ¬Å"Inside!â⬠she said to Galen. He got in. Winnie ran around the car to get in the other side. Nissa slid into the driver's seat. Keller ducked in last and snapped, ââ¬Å"Go!â⬠even as she slammed the door. Nissa floored it. The limousine shot forward like a dolphin-just as a security truck sped up from the rear. A police car appeared dead in front of them. Nissa was an excellent driver. The limo swerved with a squeal of tires and peeled out of another of the parking lot's exits. A second police car swung toward them as Nissa dodged traffic. This one had lights and sirens on. Nissa gunned the engine, and the limo surged forward again. A freeway on-ramp was ahead. ââ¬Å"Hang on,â⬠Nissa said briefly. They were passing the on-ramp-they were past it. No, they weren't. At the last possible second, the limo screamed into a ninety-degree turn. Everyone inside was thrown around. Keller clenched her teeth as her wounded arm hit the window. Then they were shooting up the on-ramp and onto the freeway. With a little patter, cat's paws of rain appeared on the windshield. Keller, leaning forward to look over Nissa's shoulder, was happy. With icy rain and the low, gray fog, they probably wouldn't be chased by helicopter. The big limousine roared past the few other cars on the road and Winnie sat looking out the rear window, murmuring a spell to confuse and delay any pursuit. ââ¬Å"We lost them,â⬠Nissa said. Keller sat back and let out her breath. For the first time since she'd entered the mall, she allowed herself to relax minutely. We did it. At the same moment, Winnie turned. She pounded the backseat with a small, hard fist. ââ¬Å"We did it! Keller-we got the Wild Power! Weâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Her voice trailed off as she saw Keller's face. ââ¬Å"And, uhâ⬠¦ I guess I disobeyed orders.â⬠Her pounding was self-conscious now; she ducked her strawberry-blond head. ââ¬Å"Um, I'm sorry, Boss.â⬠ââ¬Å"You'd better be,â⬠Keller said. She held Winnie's gaze a moment, then said, ââ¬Å"You could have gotten yourself killed, witch-and for absolutely no good reason.â⬠Winnie grimaced. ââ¬Å"I know. I lost it. I'm sorry.â⬠But she smiled timidly at Keller afterward. Keller's team knew how to read her. ââ¬Å"Sorry, too, Boss,â⬠Nissa said from the front seat. She slanted a glance at Keller from her mink-colored eyes. ââ¬Å"I wasn't supposed to leave the car.â⬠ââ¬Å"But you thought we might need a little help,â⬠Keller said. She nodded, meeting Nissa's eyes in the mirror. ââ¬Å"I'm glad you did.â⬠The faintest flush of pleasure colored Nissa's cheeks. Galen cleared his throat. ââ¬Å"Um, for the record, I'm sorry, too. I didn't mean to charge in like that in the middle of your operation.â⬠Keller looked at him. He was smiling slightly, hesitantly, the way Winnie had. A nice smile. The corner of his mouth naturally quirked upward, giving him a hint of mischief in all but the most serious moments. His green-gold eyes were apologetic but hopeful. ââ¬Å"Yeah, who are you, guy?â⬠Winnie was looking him up and down, her dark lashes twinkling. ââ¬Å"Did Circle Daybreak send you? I thought we were on this mission alone.â⬠ââ¬Å"You were. I belong to Circle Daybreak, but they didn't send me. I just-well, I was outside the shop, and I couldn't just stand thereâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ His voice died. The smile died, too. ââ¬Å"You're really mad, aren't you?â⬠he said to Keller. ââ¬Å"Mad?â⬠She took a slow breath. ââ¬Å"I'm furious.â⬠He blinked. ââ¬Å"I don't-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"You stopped me. I could have killed him!â⬠His gold-green eyes opened in shock and something like remembered pain. ââ¬Å"He was killing you.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know that,â⬠Keller snarled. ââ¬Å"It doesn't matter what happens to me. What matters is that now he's free. Don't you understand what he is?â⬠Winfrith was looking sober. ââ¬Å"I don't know. But he hit me with something powerful. Pure energy like what I use, but about a hundred times stronger.â⬠ââ¬Å"He's a dragon,â⬠Keller said. She saw Nissa's shoulders stiffen, but Winnie just shook her head, bewildered. ââ¬Å"A kind of shapeshifter that hasn't been around for about thirty thousand years.â⬠ââ¬Å"He can turn into a dragon?â⬠Keller didn't smile. ââ¬Å"No, of course not. Don't be silly. I don't know what he can do-but a dragon is what he is. Inside.â⬠Winnie suddenly looked queasy as this hit home. Keller turned back to Galen. ââ¬Å"And that's what you let loose on the world. It was the only chance to kill him-nobody will be able to take him by surprise like that again. Which means that everything he does after this is going to be your fault.â⬠Galen shut his eyes, looking dizzy. ââ¬Å"I'm sorry. But when I saw you-I couldn't let you dieâ⬠¦.â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm expendable. I don't know who you are, but I'm willing to bet you're expendable. The only one here who isn't expendable is her.â⬠Keller jerked a thumb at Iliana, who lay in a pool of pale silver-gold hair on the seat beside Galen. ââ¬Å"And if you think that dragon isn't going to come back and try to get her again, you're crazy. I'd have died happy knowing that I'd gotten rid of him.â⬠Galen's eyes were open again, and Keller saw a flicker in them at the ââ¬Å"don't know who you are.â⬠But at the end, he said quietly, ââ¬Å"I'm expendable. And I'm sorry. I didn't thinkâ⬠ââ¬Å"That's right! You didn't! And now the whole world is going to suffer.â⬠Galen shut up and sat back. And Keller felt odd. She wasn't sorry for slapping him down, she told herself. He deserved it. But his face was so pale now, and his expression was so bleak. As if he'd not only understood everything she'd said but expanded on it in his own mind. And the look of hurt in his eyes was almost insupportable. Good, Keller told herself. But then she remembered the moment she'd spent inside his mind. It had been a sunlit place, warm and open, without dark corners or shadowed crevasses. Now that would be gone forever. There was going to be a huge black fissure in it, full of horror and shame. A mark he would carry for the rest of his life. Well, welcome to the real world, Keller thought, and her throat tightened and hurt. She stared out the window angrily. ââ¬Å"See, it's really important that we keep Iliana safe,â⬠Winfrith was saying quietly to Galen. He didn't ask why, and Keller had noticed before that he hadn't asked why Iliana wasn't expendable. But Winnie went on telling him anyway. ââ¬Å"She's a Wild Power. You know about those?â⬠ââ¬Å"Who doesn't these days?â⬠He said it almost in a whisper. ââ¬Å"Well, most humans, for one thing. But she's not just a Wild Power; she's the Witch Child. Somebody we witches have been expecting for centuries. The prophecies say she's going to unite the shape-shifters and the witches. She's going to marry the son of the First House of the shapeshifters. And then the two races will be united, and all the shapeshifters will join Circle Daybreak, and well be able to hold off the end of the world at the millennium.â⬠Winnie finished out of breath. Then she cocked her strawberry-blond head. ââ¬Å"You don't seem surprised. Who are you, guy? You didn't really say before.â⬠ââ¬Å"Me?â⬠He was still looking into the distance. ââ¬Å"I'm nobody, compared to you people.â⬠Then he gave a little wry smile that didn't reach his eyes. ââ¬Å"I'm expendable.â⬠Nissa caught Keller's eye in the rearview mirror, looking concerned. Keller just shrugged. Sure, Winnie was telling this expendable guy a lot. But it didn't matter. He wasn't on the enemy side; and anyway, the enemy knew everything Winnie was saying. They had identified Iliana as the third Wild Power; the dragon proved that. They wouldn't have sent him if they hadn't been sure. But still, it was time to get rid of this interfering boy. They certainly couldn't take him to the safe house where they were taking Iliana. ââ¬Å"Nobody tailing us?â⬠Keller said. Nissa shook her head. ââ¬Å"We lost them all miles ago.â⬠ââ¬Å"You're sure?â⬠ââ¬Å"Dead certain.â⬠ââ¬Å"Okay. Take any exit, and we'll drop him off.â⬠She turned to Galen. ââ¬Å"I hope you can find your way home.â⬠ââ¬ËI want to go with you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sorry. We have important things to do.â⬠Keller didn't need to add, And you're not part of them. ââ¬Å"Look.â⬠Galen took a deep breath. His pale face was strained and exhausted, as if he'd somehow lost three days' sleep since he'd gotten into the limo. And there was something close to desperation in his eyes. ââ¬Å"I need to go with you. I need to help, to try and make up for what I did. I need to make it right.â⬠ââ¬Å"You can't.â⬠Keller said it even more brusquely than she meant to. ââ¬Å"You're not trained, and you're not involved in this. You're no good.â⬠He gave her a look. It didn't disagree with anything she'd said, but somehow, for just an instant, it made her feel small. His greeny-gold eyes were just the opposite of the dragon's opaque ones. Keller could see for miles in them, endless light-filled fathoms, and it was all despair. A sorrow so great that it shook her. She knew it must be costing him a lot to show her that, to hold himself so open and vulnerable. But he kept looking at her steadily. ââ¬Å"You don't understand,â⬠he said quietly. I have to help you. I have to try, at least. I know I'm not in your class as a fighter. But Iâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He hesitated. ââ¬Å"I didn't want to say this-ââ¬Å" At that moment, Iliana groaned and sat up. Or tried to. She didn't make it all the way. She put a hand to her head and started to fall off the seat. Galen steadied her, putting an arm around her to keep her propped up. ââ¬Å"Are you all right?â⬠Keller asked. She leaned forward, trying to get a look at the girl's face. Winnie was leaning forward, too, her expression eager. ââ¬Å"How're you feeling? You're not really hurt, are you? You just fainted from the shock.â⬠Diana looked around the limousine. She seemed utterly confused and disoriented. Keller was struck again by the girl's unearthly beauty. This close, she looked like a flower, or maybe a girl made from flowers. She had peach-blossom skin and hazy iris-colored eyes. Her hair was like corn silk, fine and shimmering even in this dim light. Her hands were small and graceful, fingers half curled like flower petals. ââ¬Å"It's such an honor to meet you,â⬠Winnie said, and her voice turned formal as she uttered the traditional greeting of the witches. ââ¬Å"Unity, Daughter of Hellewise. I'm Winfrith Arlin.â⬠She dimpled. ââ¬Å"But it's really ââ¬ËArm-of-Lightning.' My family's an old one, almost as old as yours.â⬠Diana stared at her. Then she stared at the back of Nissa's mink-colored head. Then her eyes slid to Keller. Then she sucked in a deep breath and started screaming.

The ideal temperature for milk production is 50C-250 C. To diminish the emphasis on the dairy caprine animals following points are keep in head. The analysis helps to examine the internal and external factors affecting an organization (Bohm, 2009, p. 2). Thus, this paper will use the SWOT analysis tools to evaluate Cedarville Jail, and then develop its mission statement. Furthermore, the paper will also provide the jailââ¬â¢s statement of key objectives. SWOT Analysis Strength The jail has adequate housing facilities for both juvenile and adult inmates, in addition to superior security technology. Having been recently built, these facilities do not require expensive repairs or maintenance. Similarly, there is adequate support from governments and other stakeholder. Indeed, the government is willing to allocate additional revenue to the management of the jail. Besides, I have been provided with adequate time to effect the changes, with the assistance of my deputy. Weakness The major weakness facing Cedarville jail is the morality of personnel and their lack of proper training. The prevailing organizational culture is that of macho, rather than care giving and rehabilitation. Additionally, the jail lacks important amenities namely counseling, chaplain and library for both inmates and staff. Further, the financial status of the jail is in disarray, with the financial accounting department in need of restructuring. Another factor affecting the prison is reported case of drugs and substance abuse by personnel. In addition, there is inequality in recruitment of staff in the jail, with women exclusively being employed in the lowly clerical jobs only. Opportunities The jail usually benefits from substantial amount of grants from federal and state governments, thus has an opportunity to rehabilitate juveniles without financial strain. The jail also has the opportunity of cutting its operational costs by outsourcing certain services such as gardening, cleaning and janitorial services.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Mission Statement A mission statement outlines the direction a company wishes to follow (MyStrategicPlan, n.d). Others include seeking to collaborate with local community to facilitate integration of ex-convicts in the community, and aiming to continuously improving security in the jail to prevent breakouts or suicides. Conclusion Generally, an organizationââ¬â¢s mission statement addresses t he purpose of the organization, organizationââ¬â¢s goals, and the reason why an organization exists. This statement helps to develop the organizationââ¬â¢s goals and strategies. Additionally, mission statement should be concise and easy to understand. Leadership & Change - Coursework Example An argument against this point of view that I think is important is the fact that in most cases the manager and the leaders who are in the organizationââ¬â¢s higher positions are the drivers of change. These are people who can analyze think and develop the behavioral changes that can influence the individuals who bring the resistance to change (Mullins, 2010, pg.31). I believe it is the role the managers to changes in an effective way. They have to develop some individual management skills. They should be sense maker and sense giver. Through effective communication, they can translate the changes. They can also minimize the anxiety of the employees through sharing the information and discussing the needs and the advantages of the change (Rubin, et al.2010, pg.217-9). A leadership style that is democratic can reduce the opposition and assist to in getting an easy acceptance. Whenever empathy is displayed by the leader, those employees who are scared of change will embrace the change process voluntarily. The industries such as advertisement, PR and media require a constant change. And for the globalised competition survival, the other industries have to bring in some change. I would recommend the Lewiââ¬â¢s Change Management model because many people prefer and work within given zones of safety. The model is also is easy to use, and a lot of organizations use this model to implement major changes (Ibarra & Hansen, 2011,pg.69-70). It has three stages; 2. Translation ââ¬â Immediately change has been initiated, the company goes to the translation period, and this may take some time. Efficient leadership and reassurance is important for this process to succeed. The General Electrics managed some important changes its work culture at the time of transformational leadership tenure. Research Plan - Essay Example For instance, price competition, the pressures brought about by price increases, changes in customer trends and preferences, and industry concentration. These factors have made it extremely challenging for supermarkets to keep their customers, let alone encouraging them to be loyal. As a result of these changes, there are a number of ways through which retailers respond. Tesco, in particular, has always been a leader in influencing the market, and retaining customers, largely due to their technology driven strategies, that focus on marketing the products and services with the help of technology. In addition, the company also emphasizes on establishing and developing relationships with their customers. On the other hand, other companies like Asda and Safeway have decided to take another path, focusing on offering goods and services at a more competitive price. Sainsbury, at the moment, is still trying to gain back the market share of what Tesco has taken from them (Obitz, 2009). This chapter shall focus on the concept of relationship marketing and customer relationship marketing, both of which aim to preserve the loyalty of existing customers, instead of simply aiming to gain new ones. In order for this to happen, companies need to be innovative in its marketing approach, and this study shall investigate the approach of supermarket retailers such as Tesco, which has opted to make use of the Internet as part of its marketing strategy. The following sections shall therefore discuss the integration of technology with customer relationship marketing and relationships marketing (both of which are two different concepts, as will be discussed later on). As was described in the previous paragraph, the leading supermarket retailers all have their own unique marketing approach, especially when it comes to the kind of relationship that they are able to establish with their customers. Apparently, there are two types of marketing
